Text: Healthcare and Biomedical Technology in the 21st Century
When your injury or illness needs more than a Band-Aid, you’re on your way to your nearest healthcare provider. While you are there, you will be probed, prodded, examined by big machines and strangers will be taking pictures of your insides. It may be the last thing on your mind in that moment, but do you know how these machines work?
In recent years, the applications of technology in healthcare have exploded, be it MRI’s or fabricated organs. After reading Healthcare and Biomedical Technology in the 21st Century, you will be able to understand the ins and outs of these technological advancements. This discovery-based course uses interactive lectures, case studies, and hands-on classroom activities to give non-science majors a basic understanding of biomedical technology and the opportunity to someday make informed decisions about their own healthcare.
Textbook written in language easily understood by non-science majors and contains a large number of illustrations and figures.
Comprehensive material covered that permits customization for different student groups and instructor preferences.
Textbook format suggests topics for classroom discussions.
Material based on over four years of experience teaching multiple sections of a general education course by several different instructors.
Several interesting chapters on how science works and the societal implications of developments in this field.
Homework assignments, examination question pools and Powerpoint slides for selected chapters available to instructors.
This book is great! It uses a ton of images to help explain the materials so its not a block of dry text like most science textbooks.
I thought the book was both informative and straightforward. Overall, it was insightful about the health care system and the nature of biomedical technology. Each chapter provided relatable examples of how the material applies to real-life circumstances. Though comprehensive, the book was well organized in presentation.
The layout and use of images make this textbook easy to read and understand. I am not a Science major so finding a science textbook that I can enjoy learning the material was surprising.
I am extremely interested in learning about biomedical technology, so this textbook is great for me. The material is clearly laid out and easy to understand. The material goes in depth enough to give you a good understanding of the technology, however it doesn’t make it complicated.
George R. Baran received his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from The University of Michigan. He is now a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Associate Dean for Research and Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Engineering at Temple University. Professor Baran has courtesy appointments in the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Chemistry at Temple University and is a member of the Research Medical Staff at Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. He is a recipient of the Temple University Faculty Research Award and two National Research Service Award Senior Fellowships from the National Institutes of Health. He is also a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Academy of Dental Materials and is a member of Sigma Xi Honorary Research Society.
Professor Baran’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and focused on the development of predictive models used for the design of stronger and tougher polymer matrix composites. Other private funding sources supported research on spine implants and instrumentation.
Professor Baran has taught continuously throughout his career and most recently was co-developer of the general education course “The Bionic Human.”
Mohammad F. Kiani is a nationally recognized expert in the field of biomedical engineering research and education and is currently a professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with joint appointments in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Temple University, Shriners Hospital, and Fox Chase Cancer Center. He has an academic background in biomedical and electrical engineering and has received a number of scholarly research and teaching awards. His work has been recognized and funded by a number of organizations including the NASA, the National Institute of Health, and the American Heart Association. Dr. Kiani is also a co-founder of Engineering World Health, a major not-for-profit organization that provides engineering support to a number of underserved clinics in Africa and Central America.
